1 measuring spoons
6 burger buns
1 plate for serving
- 1 lb ground beef
- ½ cup ketchup
- ¼ cup yellow mustard
- ¼ cup mayonnaise
- ¼ cup sweet pickle relish
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- 6 pieces hamburger buns
- 1 cup shredded iceberg lettuce
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 large tomato, diced
- to taste pieces pickles for garnish Optional
In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium heat, breaking it apart with a spatula, until fully cooked (about 5-7 minutes). Drain excess fat if necessary.
Lower the heat and add ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, sweet pickle relish, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper to the skillet. Stir well to combine all ingredients.
Let the mixture simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. The mixture should thicken slightly.
While the mixture simmers, prepare the hamburger buns by toasting them lightly if desired.
Once the mixture is ready, assemble the sandwiches. Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture onto the bottom half of each bun.
Top the Sloppy Joe mixture with shredded lettuce, cheddar cheese, and diced tomatoes. Add pickles if desired. Place the top half of the buns over the fillings.
Serve immediately while warm.
For a vegetarian version, substitute ground beef with plant-based ground meat. You can add sliced onions or sautéed mushrooms for additional flavor. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat before serving.
