1 large pot
1 skillet
1 cooking spoon
1 colander
4 serving bowls
- 12 ounces bow tie pasta
- 1 pound Italian sausage Either sweet or spicy, sliced.
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 piece bell pepper Red or green, chopped.
- 14 ounces diced tomatoes Canned, undrained.
- 1 cup tomato sauce
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- Salt and pepper To taste.
- Grated Parmesan cheese For serving (optional).
- Fresh basil leaves For garnish (optional).
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the bow tie pasta and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced Italian sausage and cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes, breaking it apart with a spoon as it cooks.
Add the chopped onion and bell pepper to the skillet. Sauté for about 3-4 minutes until the onion becomes translucent.
Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.
Pour in the diced tomatoes (with juice) and the tomato sauce. Add the dried oregano, dried basil, and season with salt and pepper. Stir well to combine.
Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for about 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
Add the cooked bow tie pasta to the skillet and toss until the pasta is well-coated with the sauce. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to heat through.
Serve hot, topped with grated Parmesan cheese and fresh basil leaves, if desired.
You can substitute turkey or chicken sausage for a lighter version. Feel free to add other vegetables such as mushrooms or spinach for extra nutrition. This dish can be made ahead of time and reheated, though pasta may absorb some sauce as it sits. Add a splash of water or broth when reheating for better consistency.
